Colombian Leader Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their war of words, further raising strains in their relations following American military units attacked Venezuela in an operation to oust President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has drug factories and production sites and that won't last much longer," Trump added.

Rising Threats and Claims

Addressing reporters over the weekend, the American leader hinted at comparable armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation faces serious problems and led by a problematic figure who enjoys creating the drug and distributing it to the United States."

While Colombia is the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the business.

A Deteriorating Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated markedly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Its drug trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations including the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised subsequent to a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Response

When asked if military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me personally."

President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed in a message.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will become numerous insurgents across the countryside. If they capture the nation's leader, which many of the population admires and supports, they will provoke the fierce spirit of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to Leader

He passed a period in his early life participating in the left-wing M-19 armed organization though it is believed that he never engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the nation's constitution in the early 90s subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to never again hold arms again ... but for Colombia I would take up weapons once more," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Rejection

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the national leader's protection team had been reinforced.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have rejected the threats of American military action on Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Pressure

American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he encouraged US military personnel to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, it placed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his wife and various close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its military presence in the Caribbean and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out strikes against vessels in the eastern Pacific region near Colombia.
