One two-month voyage circling Australia is being halted in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly woman who was abandoned by the cruise liner on a distant island.

The passenger had been trekking on the tropical location with other travelers from the vessel, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The liner left without her and came back after some time after the personnel became aware the passenger was unaccounted for.

A major hunt located her person the following day.

Officials are investigating the incident, together with investigators and the official investigator.

The CEO of the voyage organizer stated that guests and crew on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the rest of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the operator was working "to coordinate the homeward trips of the travelers via private aircraft".

Authorities also published an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" banning any new passengers from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would visit the vessel in Cairns upon its coming back.

Timeline of Events

The ship originally sailed from the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the 80-year-old's demise. The remote island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Travelers on board - who generally pay substantial amounts of dollars to join the expedition - were ferried there for a day trip with the option of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Reaction

The daughter of the victim said that her family was "shocked and distressed that the ship left the island after an organised outing without my mum".

In her statement, she portrayed her mum as an "energetic elderly person" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"From the little details we have been informed, it appears that there was a failure of care and common sense," she stated.

She continued that she hoped the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have done that might have protected Mother's existence".

"Based on information from the police that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to return, without accompaniment. Then the ship left, seemingly without conducting a headcount.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or soon after, she succumbed, alone."

Company Position

Through an announcement, the Chief Executive affirmed that the company was "cooperating fully with officials to support their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has happened" and had extended its total backing to the loved ones.

Maritime Business Standards

The ship accommodates up to one hundred twenty passengers with nearly fifty staff, according to company information. It was purpose-built to enter isolated locations of the nation's shoreline and is equipped with "small boats" - compact vessels used to ferry passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences like this are uncommon, and cruise ships have procedures to record which passengers are boarding or leaving, according to travel authorities.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] onboard really isn't an choice," a specialist stated.

Shipping companies consider these procedures extremely carefully and have "advanced technology in place to avoid such occurrences from occurring," the specialist added.

"This seems to be presumably a shocking - and sad - isolated incident."
