Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Dawn' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda including:

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
